Message from Principal, Olivia LIOU

Dear Parents and Students:

I thought spring was here already, but the weather recently has been strange - sometimes it¡¦s warm and sometimes it¡¦s as chilly as if it was still winter. In the past few days, rain has fallen heavily, which reminds me of ¡§Ching-Ming Memorial Day.¡¨ Next Wednesday, April 5th, is the day reserved for remembering our ancestors, and therefore it is also time to teach our children about the culture and tradition surrounding this anniversary.

We have been busy in the past couple of months: ETTV generously donated four boxes of books and literature to our students and broadcast the occasion on their local news; Our students were treated to some special guest speakers during parent conferences; and our very own Taekwondo students, led by Instructor Charlie Chen, gave an outstanding performance at the annual Southern California Chinese School Council Talent Show.

In the next couple of months, our school will be preparing for two very important competitions. The first is the regional Chinese Academic Olympiad; the second is the annual Speech and Poetry Competition. Special thanks to all of the teachers who¡¦ve put in their time and effort to help our students prepare for these upcoming challenges. These competitions once again serve as a reminder to us all that it¡¦s not about winning or losing ¡V the most important is the experience that is gained in the process. Congratulations to all of the participants¡Kyou have all already ¡§won¡¨!

Stay healthy and warm in this unpredictable weather!

Olivia Liou

Message from Vice Principal, Suzan Chang

Spring time is always busy at our Chinese school. Besides the activities from inside the school, contests from Southern California Council of Chinese School (SCCCS) have also started.

This year¡¦s Chinese New Year party was a BIG success. It was so much fun to watch our director play the drum while parents portrayed the Lion like professionals. We also enjoyed the ¡§Gong Hay Fat Choy¡¨ performance from the ZhuYin, Book I, and Book II classes, followed by the Principal¡¦s Jeopardy-like game filled with Hung Bao (red envelop) prizes. Every student had a good time and learned the meaning of Chinese New Year.

In February, our teachers met with the parents. We enjoy knowing what parents think about our teaching methods and the our school overall. To help students learn the Chinese language and culture is our first goal. If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

Since teacher Ms. Kathy Hu (Book 5) and teacher Ms. Helen Yu (Book 6) can not teach anymore. We have two new teachers, Ms. Yu (Book 5) and Ms. Wu (Book 6). They both come with many years of teaching experience. Please welcome them to our HHACS family.

Dear Parents, Faculty, and Students,

As you may already noticed, the community softball league is now in season. This is a very popular sport, which has generated a strong membership and is an integral part of the community. The league uses Cedarlane Middle School ¡¦s field for practice and games. When games are conducted on the weekends, parking can become an inconvenience as the Chinese school and softball league must share the same parking lot. Undoubtedly, we would like parking to be reserved solely for the Chinese school. However, the same is true from the softball league¡¦s perspective. In order to address this issue and prevent any miscommunication, the Director of Public Relations from HHACS Board Mr. Sammy Ponnusamy has met with School Board¡¦s Mr. Hansberger and   the softball league¡¦s president Mr. Chavez. The meeting went well and resolved the parking issue. I want to thank our Public Relations director Sammy for his efforts. Furthermore, I¡¦d like to thank the faculty and the parents for understanding this inconvenience.

Moving on, The Chinese Cultural History Bee, Speech and Poetry teams are currently in the midst of preparing for their competition. Let¡¦s wish them fun, success and our best.

Lastly, as always, I wish everyone good health and to the students, I wish you a great remainder of the academic year.

Sincerely,

Jerry Liu, Chairman of the Board
